The design of the new fleet of Piccadilly Line trains has been revealed by Transport for London.

The 94 new trains, with more space, air conditioning and walk-through carriages, will enter service from 2025, replacing the current stock that is coming up to being 50 years old.

They will allow peak frequencies to increase from 24 to 27 trains an hour by 2027, Tfl said.

The Inspiro London trains have wider doors and can carry 10 per cent more passengers due to a more efficient use of space.

They are lighter than current models, reducing their energy needs by 20 per cent.

The trains will have a driver's cab but also the ability to be driven in "driverless" mode.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "These much-needed new trains will be a great step forward for our city, improving frequency, reliability and capacity on the Piccadilly line.

"But we need investment to continue this work. I will keep lobbying the Government to deliver a long-term, viable funding model for TfL, which would enable us to carry out more upgrades to the network's ageing infrastructure, boost our economy and deliver a green recovery for London and the wider country."

More than half of the new train fleet will be built in Goole, East Yorkshire, employing up to 700 people in engineering and manufacturing roles, 250 in the construction phase and 1,700 in the broader supply chain.

Andy Lord, Managing Director of London Underground, said: "The introduction of new, desperately-needed modern and reliable trains on the Piccadilly line, and the capacity they will provide, will be a boost for the capital."
