Last year boroughs collectively spent more than £1.2billion on the homelessness crisis

Homelessness in London could reach its highest ever levels by Christmas, according to the body that represents councils in the capital.

London Councils said the city faces the "most severe homelessness crisis" in the country and a "triple whammy" of the government ending the eviction ban, Covid emergency funding and the furlough scheme over the coming months could see thousands more families pushed into temporary local authority-funded accommodation.

Hammersmith Bridge remains closed to traffic

There is mounting speculation that the Government and TfL will agree a £40 million funding package for strengthening works for Hammersmith Bridge, which could allow it to reopen this summer.

The Evening Standard has reported that funding for the strengthening works may be included in the Department for Transport's next round of funding for TfL, which is due to be decided by 28 May.
