Brentford Rewind: The history of Dock Road and its striking cobblestones

Brentford Dock was constructed in 1859 but Dock Road may have been laid much earlier.

It is listed in the Grand Union Canal & Boston Manor Conservation Area; Thames Policy Area.

It is one of the main north-south routes leading from the High Street to the former GWR dock.

The road traverses both the Grand Union Canal and the River Thames.

The road surface of granite setts is laid out in a fan pattern and barlow rails are incorporated into base of the fence at the northern end of the road.

The setts in Dock Road were re-laid in the fan and original pattern in 2009 after the water pipes were replaced but the GWR water hydrant cover outside the Hay and Straw Depot went missing.

The Hay and Straw Depot was demolished in 2011 and was built in the garden of the Underwood business at 80 High Street - the building at the end of Dock Road on the left going towards the high street.

Great Western Railway rails support the fence around the derelict Pharos Marine site.

In 2012 MSO Marine built the bridge for Lots Ait in the yard at the back.
