Work is underway on the redevelopment project set to transform Watermans Park in Brentford.

The popular riverside park on the banks of the River Thames is set for a complete makeover in the next few months, as re-landscaping work gets started.

The park was closed for the improvement works in November and will re-open at the end of March in time for spring.

The works include; a new cycleway and footpaths, new hedges, planting and wildflowers.

There will be new social areas, outdoor table tennis and a covered performance area for performances and exercise sessions.

The play area is being upgraded, with new facilities for older children.

There will also be exercise equipment, suitable for all ages.

The new look will be rounded off with additional tree planting and a new boardwalk area.

The park's famous arch, with its wind chimes crafted by local children, will be untouched and heritage assets such as cast-iron caps from the gas works will be saved and displayed in the park.

Hounslow Council said the improvement works have been shaped by responses to a public questionnaire about the future of the park.

Phil Jones, who is chair of The Friends of Watermans Park, said: "It is great to see the transformation of Watermans Park taking shape almost on a daily basis.

"In recent years our parks and open spaces have become even more important and this wonderful park by the river is right at the heart of our community.

"We are now looking for more people to get involved to make the most of the possibilities that the landscaping and new facilities offer and cannot wait for a great Spring re-opening."

Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, Councillor Samia Chaudhary has said the result will be an "attractive new outdoor space that everyone can use, enjoy and be proud of".

"Our parks and open spaces are a vitally important part of life in our borough. We know that residents of the borough really value them as a way of improving their health, wellbeing and connecting with nature," Samia said.

"The improvements to Watermans Park will make this popular green space even more accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

"We have had to temporarily close the park, and we thank the residents and park users for bearing with us while we do this."

The nearest park is St Pauls Recreation Ground, Albany Road, Brentford, an eight-minute walk from the Watermans Park.
