Brentford FC has announced an addition to their coaching staff, with Stephen Torpey set to take on the role of Academy Director starting in January next year.

Torpey's appointment is a significant move for the club, as he brings a wealth of experience and expertise from his time at Manchester City, where he served as the Head of Academy Coaching.

The ex-City coach will take on the new role from January 2024.

This move is poised to bring a new level of expertise to the club, enhancing their efforts to attain Category One status to their academy system.

Torpey's journey into the world of academy football coaching began in 2008 when he joined Liverpool's youth setup as a lead foundation coach.

During his time with the Reds, he had the privilege of working with various age groups, honing his coaching skills and developing young talents.

In 2014, Manchester City came calling, and Torpey made the switch to the northern powerhouse.

Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks at the Manchester club, ultimately assuming the role of Academy Director.

Manchester City's youth teams have achieved significant success in recent seasons, with the under-18s and under-21s winning the their third Premier League in a row last season.

The Academy Director position had remained vacant at Brentford since 2016, with the club focusing on its Development Squad for 17s to 21s and a B team during this period.

Director of football Phil Giles said: "The appointment of an academy director is a key step as we progress towards a full re-opening of our Academy in time for the 2024/25 season.

"Given the importance of the role, we invested a significant amount of time and energy into finding the right person for the job, and in Stephen we believe we have done so.

"It was important for us to find someone who has a track record of developing young football players at a high level.

"I'm sure Stephen will be an excellent appointment and look forward to him getting started in the new year."
