Why a skatepark in Brentford would be an asset for young and older

A resident who launched a petition to get a skatepark for Brentford says such a facility would be a major asset for local people.

Brentford Nub News reported last week that officials are looking at a number of options for skatepark.

Youngsters have been using the Ballymore car park but the developer has now installed security at the site and the skateboarding appears to have stopped.

Brentford used to have a skatepark in the old Brentford Market building in Chiswick back in the 1970s called Rolling Thunder.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said they launched a petition in September 2019 which was presented to Hounslow Council last February after collecting around 250-300 signatures of support.

Speaking to Nub News, the resident said: "I think there is a lot of support for the idea within the community and within the council / councillors.

"It's now about finding the right opportunity or space to have a skatepark facility it seems.

"For me, a skatepark has to be in a place that has good public footfall, and it has to be similar to Acton, especially designed / landscaped to encourage the community to take care and look after it, a facility to encourage children and teenagers to take skateboarding up, and to self-monitor and self-police their facility, as seems to happen in Acton also.

Asked what inspired the petition, they said: "I felt Acton was too far for us Brenfordians to be going on a daily basis, and actually, that Brentford would probably benefit from a similar skatepark facility too.

"Somewhere locals can send their children (when older) that they can collectively engage in a sport that is beneficial.

"It's a fallacy that skateboarders are all teenagers: they're not; to me they are a diverse community of people. In Acton, the skatepark seems to be used daily by differing age ranges at different times across the course of the day."
