Events coming up in Brentford

Thursday: COMA

Imagine the moment of waking up is actually the moment when your dream begins. In light of this new and strange reality, what will save you from the unspeakable horrors which lurk in the dark recesses of your mind? The only cure on offer is a placebo and a promise.

DARKFIELD's brand new show, COMA, premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in Canary Wharf, London. Over 30 minutes, the audience is invited to take part in a mass experiment, to lie down together and imagine a new collective reality.

Friday: Indian Man (DJ)

Indian Man is a resident DJ at WOMAD festivals all over the world and brings you the finest of Indian electronica and a unique taste of his musical inspirations from all around the world.

Chill out on the Waterman's river terrace and enjoy Indian Man playing pre and post Arun Ghosh in the Theatre.

Saturday: Cold War - Film Screening and Discussion

A joint presentation and screening by Jon Davies and Michael Brooke, Watermans two resident film experts, who finally get the chance to meet in the flesh for a entertaining and informative look at Pawel Pawlikowski's multi award winning drama.

It has more poignancy than when released given the times we live in, but stands on its own as one of the finest period dramas of the past decade. Cold War (15) Pawe Pawlikowski follows the Oscar-winning Ida with this stunning and epic romance set against the backdrop of post-war Europe.

Sumptuously shot in luminous black and white, it spans decades and nations to tell a love story that is as tragic as it is moving, and as transportive as it is honest.

Saturday: An Evening Without Kate Bush

Enter Strange Phenomena, howl with The Hounds Of Love and dance on the moors with Wuthering Heights. Over a career spanning five decades, Kate Bush has always attracted loyal and devoted followers.

An Evening Without Kate Bush explores their stories though her music, celebrating one of the most influential voices in British pop culture. Featuring classic hits like Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting and The Man With The Child In His Eyes, the show also throws in some unexpected B-sides and Bootlegs alongside unique takes on songs like This Woman's Work and Babooshka.

Kate's not there, but you can be.

Saturday: DJ Ritu

DJ Ritu is the voice of the UK's definitive independent global music show, A World in London.

DJ Ritu heads up some of the longest-running South Asian club nights - Kuch Kuch (21 yrs) and Club Kali (26 yrs). A musical chameleon, her repertoire incorporates soul, disco, Motown, pop, drum n' bass, as well as 'world' genres.

Chill out to DJ Ritu's tunes whilst having a drink on the riverside terrace at Watermans between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Saturday 11th June.

Sunday: Suburban Steps to Rockland - The Story of the Ealing Club

Cast aside by most of the Central London promoters due to the loudness of their music, guitarist Alexis Korner and harmonica player Cyril Davies one day jumped into a sidecar and travelled across London to find a venue that would accept the sound of electric blues guitar.

In West London, they bumped into an Iranian student named Fery Asgari, who was the event manager of a dingy concrete-floored basement bar used by local university students.

The first Ealing Club gig took place on the 17th of March 1962. Soon young aspiring musicians from all over the country started congregating there and performing during Alexis and Cyril's sets.

The list of youngsters who learnt the blues at the Ealing Club include: Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Paul Jones, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Dick Taylor, Jeff Beck and Eric Burdon (just to name a few).

Sunday: Kew and Brentford Walking Tour

Criss-cross rivers, canals and battlefield sites on a walk of marked contrasts, extraordinary variety and history.

Contrast sedate Kew and post-industrial Brentford on this interest-packed guided walking tour of extraordinary variety and history.

Criss-cross rivers, locks, canals and creeks. Discover where Julius Caesar may have forded the Thames in 54 BC and where a pitched battle was fought during the English Civil War.

The walk starts at Kew, the retreat of Hanoverian royalty and the world famous botanic gardens. From Queen Anne's 'little church' on Kew Green, the route passes imposing Georgian houses and crosses Kew Bridge to uncover the unique character of Brentford, a town with a gritty industrial past, now experiencing rapid regeneration and gentrification.

Explore wharfs, locks and historic boatyards; see where the Grand Union Canal enters the Thames and where Brunel built his dock. Visit a hidden gem of an eighteenth century square and finish by a pub on a backwater, where landscape painter JMW Turner once lived with his uncle.
