A University of West London (UWL) expert has republished her book celebrating the power of women in music right through from Billie Holiday to Bilie Eilish.

Republished 25 years after its original release, a new edition of She Bop: The Definitive History of Women in Popular Music is out now.

It includes updated material and a new chapter looking back on what's changed over the past 20 years.

Dr Lucy O'Brien, who has also written biographies for Madonna and Annie Lennox, interviewed more than 250 female artists, exploring their struggles and experiences of making and producing music.

Telling the stories of everyone from Dusty Springfield to Taylor Swift, her findings share an insight into the challenges women have faced in the industry.

Lucy, Course Leader on UWL's MA in Music Industry Management & Artist Development, said: "I wanted to start looking at why female artists were powerful, but why they weren't properly represented in the music press and the industry.

"Women rarely got a look in, and that's where the work for this book all started.

"These women had to fight prejudice to achieve success, and it was moving to hear their stories.

"Now, with the impact of the MeToo movement and how that politicises artists, things are very interesting and a lot of female artists feel supported to speak out about things they previously might not have."
