London has been given £35.7 million from the government to expand the number of electric vehicle charging points across all boroughs.

The capital has been awarded the funding as part of the government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund to help develop the city's network of electric charging points for cars.

Greater London currently has 12,817 electric charging points, according to Zap-Map, and the highest number of rapid charging points by volume or share of any European city, and this funding will help to further grow that network.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said on Twitter: "London is leading the way in the delivery of electric vehicle charge points and infrastructure.

"Thousands more electric vehicle charging points will be delivered across all 33 boroughs to help the capital become a net-zero carbon city by 2030.

"This funding will help ensure that we can reach our ambition to have at the very least one electric vehicle charge point on every street where needed, making it easier, more accessible and more convenient for Londoners to switch to electric vehicles."

Khan had said on 24th November 2022 that London would require between 40,000 and 60,000 charging points by 2030 to meet the expected rise in demand, with at least 10% of them being rapid charging points.

There will also be an additional £3 million in funding given to help the boroughs deliver these charging stations.

London Councils' Climate Change, Transport and Environment Lead, Mayor Philip Glanville, said: "London boroughs have installed 9,000 charge points since 2016 but we know further extensive investment in London's electric vehicle charging infrastructure is crucial to making it as easy as possible for Londoners across the capital to make the switch to cleaner travel options.

"This ambitious record of delivery for Londoners has only been possible because of the unique partnership between Government, the Mayor of London, TfL, London Councils and the boroughs and shows just what we can achieve if we work together.

"We are determined to invest London's £35.7milllion share of Government funding in distributing new charge points fairly so they are accessible to all of London's communities, helping to build confidence among our residents in making the decision to go electric."
