Hounslow residents have reacted negatively towards Transport for London's proposals to increase cycling and walking in the borough.

TfL conducted a survey of residents in Hounslow into potential changes to encourage cycling and walking, like more separated cycle lanes, improved pedestrian crossings, and new trees and other improvements to make the environment more pleasant.

There were 1103 responders and it received largely mixed feedback, with 51% of people believing that the proposed changes would have no impact on people choosing to drive for work and 34% thinking it would have no impact on people using their car for personal journeys.

Additionally, 25% of responders had concerns that the changes would increase traffic in the borough, which was the main concern that was held.

There was also qualitative feedback from the public that the proposals had not been properly thought through and that more research was needed into the topic.

In the report, TfL answered these concerns by saying: "As part of the Mayor's Transport Strategy (MTS), an increase in active travel is being targeted in order to make London a healthier, safer and greener city.

"A key aim of the MTS is to increase the proportion of journeys made by sustainable modes of transport – such as walking, cycling and public transport – to 80 per cent by 2041, up from 64 per cent today.

"Investment in cycling and walking forms a key part of this objective and will work hand in hand with public transport improvements to develop an extensive sustainable transport network across the capital.

"Together, this forms the Healthy Streets Approach which aims to help reduce the reliance on private vehicles and make walking, cycling and public transport the most appealing and practical choices.

"We want to make it easier for people in west London to use sustainable travel and lead active lifestyles.

"We also want to make the streets along the route healthier, safer and more welcoming places for everyone.

"The proposals form part of the Mayor of London's plan for Healthy Streets a long-term vision to encourage more Londoners to walk and cycle by making London's streets healthier, safer and more welcoming.

"Our proposals would bring a high-quality cycle facility to west London, linking town centres in Brentford and Hounslow and providing a further connection to Chiswick and Hammersmith.

"Data from existing segregated cycle routes suggest the new route would also draw cyclists away from other routes, maximising the benefit of providing high quality facilities on what is a major road and linking town centre destinations."
