Brentford Women won comfortably in the League Cup against Newhaven FC and ran out 2-0 winners to progress to the next round.

Goals in either half from Nikki Saunders and Eleonora Cottrell proved to be enough to win at Bedfont Sports Club.

This win ends the Bees run of having lost their last two games across all competitions and bouncing immediately back from a chastening 5-0 loss last weekend in the FA Cup.

Nadia Peters could have given Brentford the lead after 20 minutes as the right-back found herself at the back post and was picked out beautifully with a cross but she could not make clean contact with the ball and it bounced wide.

Chloe Logie also went close to opening the scoring as she took aim from the top of the box and picked out the bottom corner only for Annie Hills to get across and push it round the post.

The goal was very much coming and two minutes from the half time whistle it came as Saunders picked up the ball mid-way inside the Newhaven half and went passed two defenders before slamming the ball into the top corner giving Hills no chance.

A slick move just after the interval could have doubled the Bees' advantage when Saunders gave the ball into Sophie Troth and her first-time pass sent Logie in one-on-one with the 'keeper only for her to be denied again.

Cottrell came off the bench and made a big impact as she got onto the end of Troth's cross across goal and diverted it into the back of the net.

It could have been a second for Cottrell off the bench when her volley struck the bar as Brentford's dominance persisted and the score line ultimately did not do justice to the home team's dominance.
