Brentford Women came unstuck in their first league game of the year as they lost 1-0 on the road against Denham United Ladies.

Chloe Logie missed a penalty late in the first half as the Bees failed to take advantage of the chances they were presented with.

Amie Hewitt scored a free-kick on the hour mark and Brentford failed to find a way back into the game.

After this defeat, the Bees remain in second in the L&SEWFL Division One North and one point behind league leaders Clapton Community.

Brentford could have had the lead inside 60 seconds as Afiya Johnson drove down the side and picked out Kirsty Matthews with a cross, and her header crashed against the crossbar and bounced to safety.

The early onslaught continued as Logie ran through on the goalkeeper, but her effort was well saved by Zara Butt.

Butt was quickly becoming a nemesis of Logie as after 12 minutes, the Denham 'keeper sprung across her line to deny Brentford's number nine once again.

After half an hour Brentford came close again as Nikki Saunders slid a ball in to Regan Graver in the penalty area, but the defender failed to keep her shot down and it flew over the top.

With four minutes remaining before half-time Logie was cut down by Butt in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, Logie and Butt faced off again from 12 yards out and once again it was the Denham goalkeeper that came out on top and made the save.

Early in the second half Denham properly threatened for the first time as Laura Cox opted to let fly from range and forced Emily Boycott to be on alert to make the save.

The Denham 'keeper was single-handedly keeping her side in the game as Saunders found a yard of space in the area and got a shot off, but Butt was once again on hand to deny her.

On the hour mark Brentford were caught cold as Denham won a free-kick on the edge of the area, Hewitt stepped up to take it and arrowed her effort into the top corner of the net to give the hosts the lead.

Brentford pushed to get themselves back on terms, but there was no way passed Butt as Logie did well to slide Saunders in down the left, but her fierce shot was saved by the Denham goalkeeper.

Matthews also came close as time slipped away when she tried her luck from the edge of the area, but the shot whistled wide of the post.
