Ivan Toney becomes first Brentford player to go to a World Cup with England
Ivan Toney has become the first Brentford player to be included in the England World Cup squad whilst playing for the club.
Southgate selected his 26-man squad for the finals this afternoon and has selected the 26-year-old to be on the plan to Qatar.
Toney is yet to be given his first cap for his country, but was a part of the squad for the most recent international break for games against Italy and Germany.
In being named in that squad, Toney became the first current Brentford player to be selected for an England matchday squad since Les Smith in 1939 and he will now become the first player to from the club to go to a World Cup with the Three Lions.
The Brentford striker has scored 8 goals so far this season and is only behind Harry Kane in terms of Premier League goals for English players so far this season.
Reports had suggested Toney might have accepted a call-up from Jamaica in March 2021, but eventually decided to decline as he continued to harbour hopes of playing for the country of his birth and has been rewarded for that decision through his inclusion in this squad.
The World Cup will begin on 20th November when hosts Qatar face Ecuador and England's campaign will get underway the following day against Iran.
