A rescue operation has taken place overnight to help a small whale that became stranded in the Thames at Richmond.

Crowds gathered at Richmond Lock on Sunday evening after the whale, believed to be a Minke, got stuck.

RNLI rescuers arrived at about 9pm and moved the whale

to a safer location.

A vet will now assess the animal's health to determine if it is healthy enough to be released.

Fire crews and marine rescue divers tried for several hours to float the whale - approximately 3-4m long - off concrete.

It is understood the animal was stuck on the lock's boat rollers.

Nub News reporter Jessica Broadbent, reporting from the scene said: "A minke whale has been stuck in Richmond lock for several hours.

"The whale's tail can be seen moving up and down on the inflatable dingy and occasional bursts of water from the blowhole can be seen as the whale breathes.

"At least 20 members of the RNLI and fire brigade are still trying to help the whale."

This is a breaking news story. Nub News will continue to provide updates as details emerge.
