The MP for Richmond Park has written to police and crime bosses raising her "concerns" over the low levels of police resources in the area.

It comes after three incidents happened in Richmond Park this month involving bicycle thefts and machete attacks.

Sarah Olney, Liberal Democrat MP, said while she welcomes some measures in response to incidences, she does "not think they will be sufficient in satisfying" the concerns of constituents.

In her letter to Sophie Linden, the deputy mayor for policing and crime, the MP said: "I strongly believe we have a duty of care to make sure local residents can feel safe.

"Given recent events and the relatively low levels of police resources that are in place to address them, I would argue that we are failing to provide such assurances."

Ms Olney added: "One specific area I would urge you to look into is the extent to which police resources are often funnelled out of the borough and into more central parts of the city.

"While I recognise there is a clear appetite to provide robust police responses to the various civil demonstrations London has seen over the past two years, it remains critical that resources are kept in other parts of the capital to ensure that violent and criminal activity can be tackled effectively."

On Wednesday, October 6, at around 7pm, a man reported being pushed off his bike and having it stolen by two men riding electric scooters.

On Thursday, October 7, at 4pm, a pro cyclist was pushed from his bike and threatened with a machete by four men on two mopeds and his bike was stolen.

On Monday, October 11, at 5pm, a man was also knocked off his bike and threatened with a machete by two men on a moped.

All three suffered minor injuries.

Sophie Linden, deputy mayor for policing and crime, told The Local Democracy Reporting Service: "I'm grateful to Sarah Olney MP for raising her concerns with me, as Londoners have every right to feel safe.

"Keeping Londoners safe is the Mayor's number one priority, that is why he has invested record funding in policing to ensure there are now 1,300 more police officers on the streets, and we are calling on government to provide the support we need to get more officers on our streets right across London.

She added: "It is vital that we continue to ensure the Met have the resources they need in order to suppress violence in local areas, patrolling open spaces and parks, as well as working to keep our town centres safe both day and night."
