Research from the Greater London Authority has found that London Boroughs have already hit their targets for building council houses.

Statistics from the Greater London Authority have said that the target of 20,000 council houses built by 2024 has already been exceeded.

The target was set by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan back in 2018 and due to more council houses being built in 2022 than in any year since the 1970s, the goal has been reached a year early.

Cllr Darren Rodwell, London Councils' Executive Member for Regeneration, Housing & Planning, said: "Boroughs are proud to be building the next generation of council homes across the capital.

"We want to give more Londoners the opportunity to live in affordable, high-quality homes – and increasing the supply of council housing is vital to achieving that.

"London's housing pressures remain immense. Although we're pleased with the progress being made, we remain absolutely determined to keep driving up delivery and building the homes our communities are crying out for."

London Councils have said that the lack of affordable housing is the biggest reason behind London having the largest homelessness crisis in the country, with an estimated 166,000 Londoners being homeless or living in temporary accommodation.
