Hounslow Council has approved the construction of five, two-storey houses in Brentford, which it had submitted itself.

The site where the council want to build is currently a car park on the corner of Windmill Road and Orchard Road.

In the application it explained that the new homes "are all to provide affordable housing at social rent" and that the buildings will not take away from the rest of the area.

The application added: "The proposed buildings are considered to be designed and located to ensure they do not detract from the character of the area."

Hounslow Council also ensured that there will be parking available now that the current car park is set for removal.

The houses will include one, four-bedroom home and four, three-bedroom homes – all coming with their own private garden and cycle store at the front of the properties.

However, the proposed plan faced criticism, following the council consulting with neighbours and receiving 74 responses back.

Some of the comments included: "Lack of need for additional housing" and that children in the area who play in the car park, "will be displaced on the road."

The council responded: "There is a need for affordable housing, this scheme would contribute to this and provide needed accommodation for families on the Council's waiting list."

It added: "The car park is not a designated playground, there is no loss of children's play area as part of the application."
