The third runway at Heathrow still faces obstacles

A ban on Heathrow building a third runway has been lifted by the Supreme Court.

The Appeal Court had previously blocked the scheme because it said the government's airports strategy failed to meet UK up-to-date climate targets.

But the Supreme Court reversed that decision today due to the third runway plan being based on less strict climate targets at the time it was proposed.

It means the airport can now apply for planning permission for the project but it is set to face major obstacles, including a public inquiry.

Environmentalists are also still planning to challenge every stage of the planning application in the courts – including at the European Court of Human Rights.

Campaigners argue that relying on outdated emissions targets is inconsistent with the right to life.

Climate campaigners have said a third runway will mean more planes flying over areas such as Brentford.

A final decision will be made by the government.
