Ethan Pinnock says users should have to verify their ID

Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock has called for social media companies to insist that users verify their ID before the open accounts to reduce the amount of abuse.

In an interview with The Sun, Pinnock said: "Just having to give some form of ID would mean that if you post racism on social media platforms you can be identified by the authorities and face the full force of the law.

"It also stops people creating a whole number of fake accounts. What you see now is if someone has their account blocked, they've several other ones they can jump on after that.

"Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the like give a lot of people the platform to say or do things they wouldn't do in a social situation.

"And the problem is they are getting away with it. People can see that someone can say something and nothing happens."

It comes on the back of an announcement of a football-wide social media boycott between 30 April and 3 May.

Brentford FC will be joining in with the withdrawal from social media platforms after abuse suffered by players.
