The 'Pothole Pledge' has come to a smooth end today as the 81st street was mended since the programme was first announced three years ago by Hounslow Council.

Starting with Brentford's Chestnut Avenue in 2018, over £4 million was invested in the scheme to improve the borough's roads, with residents invited to report the streets they felt needed attention.

Today Osterley Avenue was resurfaced, marking the final pothole to be filled.

The Pothole Pledge was commissioned on top of the borough's established road maintenance programme.

The borough's highways have been managed under contract by Hounslow Highways since January 2013.

As well as road and pavement maintenance, Hounslow Highways also delivers street cleaning, the removal of fly-tipping and graffiti, and managing trees and grounds maintenance.

Visiting Osterley Avenue to inspect the new road surface, Cllr Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Companies, said: "We know that repairing potholes is something that is important to residents and we understand the feeling that this should be a priority for the council.

"I'm really pleased to report that we have spent £4million, double the amount that was pledged, and have resurfaced more than 80 roads right across the borough.

"Resident views and feedback have been at the very heart of the project, helping us identify which roads are the highest priority.

"Thanks to all residents who nominated roads to be improved."

Hounslow Council added there are a number of roads in the borough affected by extensive surface deterioration which is not severe enough to meet the Council's normal criteria, agreed with the Department for Transport, for repair.

They said many are roads suffering delamination – which is when the asphalt layer has detached from the concrete base creating an uneven surface, and the process to fix the delamination problems is more intensive.

In the latest annual State of the City report, all 32 London boroughs were assessed to reveal the best and worst in a number of categories.

Hounslow received a perfect score for its road maintenance asset management for the second year running and was also found to have the lowest backlog of potholes to fix for the third year in a row.
