A brand new sports hub with exercise studios, tennis courts and outdoor pitches has opened at Gunnersbury Park.

The new venue, previously hailed to become one of London's largest outdoor facilities, opened on Monday, April 12, as lockdown restrictions eased across the country.

Work began in 2018 on the £13.8 million joint project between Ealing and Hounslow councils, and was expected to be completed in 2019.

As well as a state-of-the-art gym with more than 100 machines, there are also two group exercise studios with "automated" virtual classes.

The venue, near Acton Town tube station, also hosts eight tennis courts, two floodlit pitches for all weather and 10 grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket.

The indoor sports hall is revealed to offer a range of sports, including competition standard courts for handball, futsal and volleyball.

The centre will be managed by leisure provider Better.

Gary Alderson, Ealing Council's executive director of place, said: "We have worked alongside our partners Hounslow to ensure we deliver important community, sports and leisure facilities for residents in the local area.

"Our long-term vision will see Gunnersbury Park as a place where local people can enjoy sport, beautiful green spaces and a rich local history long into the future.

"With all the Covid-19 limitations this past year, many people may have been finding it tougher to keep active.

"The new Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub provides an array of opportunities to quickly get reacquainted with good exercise habits or perhaps the chance to start new ones."

Hounslow Council's executive director of environment, culture and customer services, Victoria Lawson, added: "We are delighted to announce that the Gunnersbury Sports Hub, a state-of-the-art new facility for local sports in Hounslow and Ealing, is open for business.

"From football, rugby and tennis to running and keeping fit, there are activities available for everyone.

"We urge local residents to take advantage of this fabulous new facility on their doorstep, which is situated in one of our beautiful green spaces."
