Brentford past and present: The Weir where a very famous artist lived as a boy

In our regular series looking at the history of Brentford, today we focus on the popular Weir bar in Market Place.

The building was a pub known as the White Horse as early as 1603.

A rebuild and the addition of the tiles on the outside walls would seem to be about the same date as other pubs in the town.

Originally the pub encompassed just the corner building with the Doulton tiles but it later incorporated the Victorian house next door in the 1980s.

An earlier house on this site had been the home of William Marshall who gave a home to his nephew Joseph Mallord William Turner when he was about 10 years old.

That's JMW Turner who went on to be a world-famous artist.

Some reports suggest that at one time the building was refurbished by local architect/surveyor Nowell Parr, which would explain his trademark Doulton Tiles outside the building.

Today The Weir pub is a thriving bar and restaurant but the old beams and small storerooms can still be seen inside the building.

There is also an outhouse in the pub's sprawling garden.
