Kingstonian won a valuable away point in Spencer Knight's first league game in charge as it finished goalless at Aveley in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

It was a cagey first half that produced few chances for either side, but new addition Jacob Bancroft looked dangerous on his debut for the K's.

Aveley had the upper hand after the break, but Declan Skura missed a guilt edged opportunity which could have won it.

A draw against third-place Aveley is a creditable point, but does leave Kingstonian in 17th and without a win in three games.

Garrett Kelly won a free-kick before the half hour mark in a sluggish opening in Essex and Ben Allen looked to take on the shot from a long way out, but it was a comfortable stop for Sam Jackson.

Connor Witherspoon broke through midfield and into the box, shifted the ball onto his right foot and lashed a shot just wide of Jackson's post as Aveley continued to have the better of scant chances.

Kenny Aileru also had to have a go from distance as the promotion challengers struggled to find space in the K's back line, and his effort stung the palms of Jackson and he parried it to safety.

Early in the second period Kingstonian got their big opening when Michael Abnett swung in a delightful cross right onto the head of Skura and from six-yards out, but his diving header somehow ballooned over the top.

Kingstonian came on stronger after the break and made it a real contest against a side towards the top of the division, but neither side really managed to trouble their opposing 'keeper.

It is back to cup action on Tuesday for Knight's men as they face a local derby against their former landlords in Corinthian Casuals in the First Round of the Surrey Senior Cup.
