Ivan Toney's cute backheel to flick the ball past Brighton's Robert Sanchez marked his 50th league goal in his 100th appearance for Brentford in all competitions.

His second, from the spot, in the Hornet's 2-0 win on Friday night (October 14) was his 55th goal for the club in his third season there.

It was his 17th for Brentford from 12 yards, continuing his 100 per cent penalty record for the club - another factor that has seen him tipped for a call up for England's 2022 World Cup squad.

And it was a spot kick that got Toney's Brentford scoring career off the ground two years ago after his £5million switch from Peterborough.

Now eyeing a spot on the plane to Qatar, the 26-year-old's first goal for the club came in September 2020 and salvaged a point on the road at Millwall in the Championship.

Toney would then bag braces in the next three league games against Preston, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday before claiming his first hat trick for the club against Wycombe Wanderers in January 2021.

Ultimately, he would finish as the league's top scorer as the Hornets gained promotion through the playoffs where he would net against Bournemouth in the semi-final and Swansea at Wembley. Both goals would be penalties.

Fast forward to October 2022, the former Northampton striker now has 55 goals for Brentford - the most he has scored for any club.

Having been top scorer in League One before joining Brentford, and then outscoring everyone in the Championship during his first season at the Brentford Community Stadium, his ability to deliver at the highest level was still questioned at the start of his first full Premier League season.

But he opened his top flight account against Aston Villa during the third game of the season, hammering the ball into the top corner past Emiliano Martinez after just seven minutes.

He would go onto to score 12 in the league last campaign, including a first Premiership hat trick against Norwich.

But it has been his start to the 2022-23 season that has earned him his first England call up during the last international break.

Just ten games in he already has eight, including a hat trick against Leeds, one of which won the September goal of the month award.

He now sits third in the scoring charts, only one behind Harry Kane and seven behind Earling Haaland.

Phil Foden is the only other English player nearing the top of the list with six.

Toney currently has one of the best conversion rates across the top five leagues in Europe, scoring from every 0.71 shots on target this campaign.

And while he is outperforming his xG of 5.8 so far this season, there is no sign of his goal scoring slowing down.

Sure, he was only sat on the bench against Germany and Italy during England's Nations League games last month, but Gareth Southgate would be a brave man to omit Toney from his squad completely.
