Hounslow Council has welcomed the prime minister's announcement to aim to double the number of journeys made by bicycle.

Boris Johnson's proposals include designating more 'low-traffic neighbourhoods', where roads are closed to through traffic, and road closures near schools, to promote cycling among pupils and boost air quality.

Cllr Hanif Khan, Cabinet Member for Transport at Hounslow Council said: "The prime minister's announcement is welcome, and this is the journey that Hounslow Council is already on.

"We believe our approach to our Low Traffic Neighbourhoods - the Streetspace programme - brings all the benefits the prime minister calls for; increased walking and cycling, cleaner air and nicer neighbourhoods, fewer accidents and safer roads for pedestrians, cyclists and our children.

"We are committed to making sure everybody has their say on each trial and - through an independent review process - to listening to communities, sharing the data and responding to feedback.".

Streetspace has introduced 108 trial traffic measures across the borough, with 35 of those as School Streets in areas around schools – one of the largest School Streets programmes in London.
