Hounslow Council prepares support package for Afghan refugees
Hounslow Council announced it is putting plans in place to support Afghan migrants fleeing the Taliban.
The One Hounslow package of support is being developed in partnership with statutory agencies, charities and voluntary sector organisations to ensure Hounslow Council can respond to the Governments request for councils to provide sanctuary to refugees.
The plans will ensure the right support and resettlement for vulnerable families and individuals is achieved, without putting pressure on resources for existing residents.
Cllr Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council said the borough is ready to do what it can to help those displaced by the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan.
Cllr Curran stated: "As a borough which celebrates and welcomes diversity, we have a proud history providing sanctuary to those fleeing violence and terror, supporting their settlement in the UK and helping integrate them into our communities.
"Already, alongside the Council's own preparations, we've had residents come forward asking how they can help, which is truly inspiring and testament to the generous spirit of this borough.
"We will make things clear what more we will do and how residents can help when we fully understand the details of any Government request.
He added: "The Government also needs to play its part by adequately resourcing the new settlement scheme and financially support councils who want to do everything possible to welcome refugees."
