Hounslow Council Deputy Leader Katherine Dunne has praised Sadiq Khan for expanding the ULEZ scrappage scheme ahead of the expansion in August.

Dunne and Shantanu Rajawat wrote an open letter to the Mayor of London on Tuesday 30th May, stating that they believed that changes needed to be made to the scrappage scheme ahead of the ULEZ expansion to help small businesses and families to get vehicles which are compliant with the restrictions.

On Thursday 1st June, Khan announced that the scrappage scheme was being expanded so that small businesses with 50 or less employees and charities can retrofit up to three vans or minibuses and any family receiving family benefits can apply to the scrappage scheme.

Dunne said: "We warmly welcome the Mayor of London's decision to expand the ULEZ scrappage scheme today. This significant expansion will mean small businesses and families in Hounslow will now be eligible to apply for thousands of pounds of support to support a change in their vehicle.

"We wrote to the Mayor of London this week highlighting that while we support the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) we requested that he review the current criteria for the scrappage scheme and we are pleased to see the criteria has been expanded.

"We are delighted that the Mayor of London listened to the views of Londoners on the scrappage scheme. Toxic air is damaging the health of people across London and expanding ULEZ London-wide will ensure five million Londoners can breathe cleaner air.

"The expansion of the scrappage scheme also means more Hounslow residents can transition to cleaner vehicles or take up other options – ensuring we make Hounslow a greener and cleaner place to live, work and study."

In their open letter, Dunne and Rajawat had said that the scrappage scheme should be changed to enable more small businesses to meet the criteria; review the grace period for retrofitted vehicles; and helping more parents and carers to be able to scrap their vehicles.
