A historic calvary barracks 10 minutes from Heathrow will be turned into 1,525 homes after Hounslow Council finalised an agreement with developers. The news will come as a relief to construction company Inland Homes who are helming the £20m project after a tumultuous few months for the firm, which has seen their chairman step down and trade of its shares suspended.

The plan aims to renovate the Grade II listed buildings while providing commercial space and green spaces on the brownfield site. Permission for work to start was approved by the council in October 2022 with the provision that it be referred to the Mayor of London and there was the completion of a Section 106 agreement.

This requires Inland to do a number of extra things in order to finalise the permission and start development. The agreement was completed on May 18 and included a number of obligations that the owner of the site is required to fulfil.

These include providing affordable housing, improvements to Beaversfield Park, carbon offsetting, childcare facilities, sports facilities, highway works, sustainable travel, resident's parking permits & controlled parking zone, bus improvements, London Underground contribution and active travel. With Inland and the council finalising the plan construction can now begin on the site.

The construction project will be made up of 35 per cent affordable housing. Inland said the development of the 36.7-acre site, which was originally constructed in response to the french revolution in the 18th century, will result in the retention of 14 Grade II listed buildings and nine locally listed buildings, and create 10.6 acres of green space and 2,700 sq m of commercial space.

Nish Malde, interim chief executive officer at Inland Homes said the consent demonstrated Inland's success in "working collaboratively with local Councils to secure planning consent on complex brownfield sites."

Inland has been troubled in recent months after its co-founder stood down after a profit warning was published in September, which showed it was expected to lose more than £90m last year.

However, the finalisation of the deal between the firm and the council is some positive news for the struggling company. Malde said: "Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow is an exceptional site and we have worked closely with the London Borough of Hounslow to agree the terms of the Section 106 agreement and achieve this significant planning consent.

"With the consent granted, we look forward to supporting the external investors behind this impressive development and in that delivering regeneration and prosperity for Hounslow."
