The country's first electric chippers will soon be seen on the streets of Brentford.

Following the successful completion of a two-week trial by Hounslow Highways, the chipper will begin operations with the Hounslow Highways Tree Team.

The team have already been using part of the new electric inventory through tools such as electric chainsaws.

The chipper uses lithium-ion technology and is able to match motor-driven machines in both power and performance.

Its lightness also allows it to be easily transported to any site required when compared to the non-electrical chippers which are often heavier.

Martin Clack, Divisional Director at Hounslow Highways said: "We are continuing to look for new green additions to our fleet, and this chipper is a great example of Hounslow Highways continuing commitment to find not only the best equipment in terms of performance, but also tools that will support our ambition to lower our carbon footprint."

Cllr Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Trading Companies said: "Across the Council we are continuing to develop innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint and tackle the climate emergency.

"We are committed to ensuring council owned companies and fleets utilise new technologies in our mission to achieve our Climate Emergency Action Plan by 2030.

"We are also encouraging our suppliers to follow the same principle and I'm delighted to see our key partner Hounslow Highways innovating in this important way. I'm hoping it will be quieter as well as cleaner, though chipping wood will never be a silent operation.

"It's great to see the electric chipper is not only bringing benefits to the environment but also to the efficiency of our operations, providing a better, cost effective service for our residents."
