Find out what was discovered beneath your street going back thousands of years

A story map that shows what was found under local streets from tens of thousands of years ago has been created by archaeologists involved in the Brentford Project.

Orion Heritage have created the map of excavations some of which took place as long ago as the 1960s and 70s.

One example is an excavation at Kew Bridge station where Palaeolithic mammal remains were recorded that included mammoth, bison, aurochs, red deer, brown bear, reindeer and woolly rhinoceros.

A number of Bronze Age weapons were found under land that is now Justin Close in Brentford Dock before the estate was built in the late 1970s. These are now in the Museum of London.

In 1977, three tranchet axes which have been dated to the Mesolithic – mid Stone Age – period were found on the Brentford Dock site.

A separate Neolithic Greenstone axe was recovered as well as a number of Iron Age weapons.

During the construction of Brentford Dock, a Bronze Age horn cap was found. Experts say this was probably the terminal for a double wagon or chariot-yokes.

In 1968 the site near St Lawrence's Church was excavated by archaeologists who recorded evidence of Neolithic occupation with the identification of over 180 struck flints, including blades and a few cores.

Roman coarse native and samian ware were recorded, dating to AD50-100.

Medieval pottery and post-holes for a 19th Century timber building were also identified.

The excavation identified a compact gravel and earth road which is thought to possibly be part of the Roman London to Silchester Road.

At Syon Park, artefacts predating the abbey include a prehistoric flint arrow head and dozens of pottery fragments dating to AD120-160.

Several skeletons and a funerary monument were recorded and later garden features (bedding trenches) were observed, dating to the late 16th- early 17th Century.

A Roman road was also discovered in the grounds.

The story map features many more locations.
