A Hounslow mum has been given renewed hope for justice in the case of her missing son 25 years after his death, The Mirror has reported.
Sukhdev Reel has been told by the Metropolitan Police that they are going to look back at her son, Ricky Reel's, case, which she has always maintained was racially motivated.
Ricky, 20, went missing on 14th October 1997 after he and his friends, all of whom were South Asian, were subject to an attack by two white men, they all ran in different directions and Ricky was not seen until his body was found in the River Thames seven days later.
No one was ever arrested for his murder, but the Metropolitan Police have now emailed Sukhdev to say they intend to look back at the case.
Mrs Reel told The Mirror in July 2021 that she had been contacted by someone claiming to know the identity of her son's killer and that the attack was racially motivated.
She took this new information to the police, with the demand that she gets to speak to Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, which happened on 11th January, the first time she had been allowed the chance to speak with any Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
Mrs Reel has now informed The Mirror that she has received an email stating that the case is going to be looked at once again by The Metropolitan Police's Major Inquiries Specialist Casework team using "new lines of enquiry".
The Met confirmed they had opened an enquiry into the case, which had uncovered multiple failings in the investigation, for example they had worked under the belief that Ricky had fallen into the Thames after falling in accidentally whilst trying to urinate and subsequently drowning.
However, they had never taken any forensic evidence from the scene or from his clothes, nor did they collect CCTV footage in time or speak potential witnesses until months after Ricky's death.
