The Butts has been described as a "seat of paradise" but why this name?
The area was developed by William Parish from 1690 and development continued until the mid-18th century.
The area was formerly used as an overspill market during the latter part of the 17th century.
There are two theories as to why the area is called The Butts.
One is that the name is derived from it once being used as an archery ground.
Another theory is that the name comes from a common field system which existed in England for 100 years.
Under the system, land was divided into half-acre strips which were separated from one another by hedges and mounds of earth and the spots where one boundary adjoined the other were called 'Butts'
The half-acre strips could also explain why the road leading up to The Butts from the high street is called Half Acre.
The Butts is tucked away behind Brentford High Street and boasts some of the town's most expensive residential properties.
