Ruth Cadbury MP has criticised the large air conditioning bills some constituents have received as "yet another example of the awful treatment facing many in England".

The Brentford & Isleworth MP took to social media today (Thursday, September 29) to lambast a situation in which leaseholders and tenants in a development in Brentford have been sent "large, retrospective bills for their air-conditioning units".

Some bills are in the hundreds of pounds she said "despite residents not knowing previously they could be charged for A/C".

Temperatures in the UK soared this summer with historic heat records shattered in England, Wales and Scotland.

Many people resorted to air-conditioning units to stay cool, especially when trying to sleep at night.

But built-in air conditioning units have high running costs – adding around £5.29 per week to an energy bill, Uswitch estimates, if used for just one hour every day.

Ms Cadbury wrote letters "as a matter of urgency" to the management companies of the Brentford development but these have gone unacknowledged.

Her final tweet about the issue concluded: "It is not fair on tenants or leaseholders to face such large bills. Sadly this is yet another example of the awful treatment facing many in England. I will be raising this when Parliament returns & will keep campaigning on this issue."
