The London Museum of Water & Steam in Brentford is raising funds to "save" the museum and a donor is matching contributions until 15 January.

A "generous" donor is matching any donation up to £250 to help the museum reach its target of £25,000 needed to keep it open.

Through the Aviva Community Fund, the London Museum of Water & Steam has received over £5,800 from 47 different supporters, in and outside Brentford.

The museum says: "Thanks to our amazing community and supporters we've had a very successful start to the fundraiser to save the London Museum of Water & Steam. Moving forward we have a very exciting announcement, a generous donor has agreed to match donations! All donations up to £250 will be matched, £1 for £1!"

The London Museum of Water & Steam is a charity and since 1974 has showcased the Kew Bridge Waterworks and its collection of world-class steam engines.

"We want to future proof the heritage of steam engines sustainably, both environmentally and financially. We want to work creatively to move the industrial museum sector forward, continuing the engineering tradition we're built on by adopting green technology and processes which respect our world, educate our visitors and make the museum a centre for innovation and learning", it says.

The Brentford based museum wants to continue being a hub of history and creativity surrounding steam power which was used around the world during the 18-19th century.

It adds: "We've got big plans. We're striving to become the creative, inspirational cultural asset the city of London now needs. Our story and the story of water has never been more relevant."
