A west London council will shame fly-tippers by exposing them on CCTV after its streets were covered in nearly 65,000 bags of dumped rubbish in a year.

Hounslow Council plans to publish CCTV stills of fly-tippers in action on its website and will ask residents to identify them so they can be fined.

The council's plan forms part of a wider crackdown on the problem in the borough after more than 25,000 incidents were reported in Hounslow last year.

According to the council, there were 24,210 incidents of fly-tipping on public land in Hounslow in 2021, which included 63,343 bags of dumped rubbish.

Additionally, 1,887 fly-tipping incidents on private land were reported to the council.

Clearing up the rubbish cost taxpayers more than £1.3 million, according to council estimates.

Images of fly-tipping in Hounslow show huge piles of black rubbish bags, supermarket carrier bags and even mattresses and an old pram dumped next to bins.

The council has also launched a special enforcement team which monitors hotspots in the borough.

According to the law, while fly-tipping includes large items such as mattresses and fridges being dumped illegally, it also includes smaller amounts of discarded rubbish, such as bags left next to a street bin or on the pavement.

Under the law, fly-tipping is a criminal offence and offenders can be fined £400.

If the dumped items are particularly large or dangerous, the fly-tipper can be taken to court and face fines of up to £50,000 and time in prison.

Leader of Hounslow Council Steve Curran said: "There is absolutely no need for anyone fly-tipping in Hounslow, and I would urge everyone to play their part in helping us to tackle the illegal dumping of waste.

"It not only makes our borough look a mess but also wastes money clearing it up.

"This public money would be better spent on adult and children's care and other essential services.

"We take this illegal activity very seriously. We will be regularly posting CCTV images of people we believe may be involved in fly-tipping and we want your help to identify the culprits.

"We will leave no stone unturned in trying to identify them and bring them to book. You've been warned."
