Hounslow Council has given the go-ahead for the Streetspace programme and says the trial schemes implemented will be assessed through an independent review process.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department for Transport issued new statutory guidance and called on local authorities to adapt transport networks to provide space to enable social distancing as well as reallocating road space to support active travel.

The Mayor of London also launched his Streetspace for London programme which Hounslow's programme is a part of.

It aims to provide more space for people to observe social distancing and safer access to schools, businesses and services in Brentford.

The plan has also been introduced to provide safer, healthier and more pleasant environments for walking and cycling through reducing through traffic on non-principal roads.

It is hoped the plan will reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

Councillor Hanif Khan, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "As a council we believe these schemes have the potential to bring real gains for us all - less traffic, cleaner air, a better environment, more opportunities to cycle, walk and keep healthy, and increased attractiveness of the places where we live.

"We recognise a few schemes have divided opinion and we are keeping an open mind. We genuinely want all voices to be reflected in the assessment of the schemes, and we urge residents to make sure their views, in favour or not, are heard and inform the independent review process."
