A quilting group at the Brentford docks donated 50 handmade baby quilts for Afghan mothers expected at West Middlesex Hospital.

Baby quilts were donated after social media appeals were launched to collect items for pregnant Afghan refugees and babies arriving in the UK.

West Middlesex Hospital is the main hospital for receiving Afghan refugees due to its proximity to Heathrow airport.

Hounslow Rotary Club said: "Brentford Dock has a vibrant community spirit and are coming together this week to answer the call for support for the Afghani mothers expected in West Middlesex Hospital when they come into Heathrow.

"The quilting group kept working throughout the pandemic and has recently started to meet together face to face again, along with all the other groups like the Marie Curie coffee morning."

Additional donations were collected by the Hounslow Rotary Club earlier today.

There has been a huge response from the public since the appeals for items for Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan.

Hospitals have been overwhelmed over the bank holiday weekend with donations and West Middlesex Hospital issued a statement on Sunday (29 August) asking the public to hold off for the time being.

They said they would publicise on their website and social media when they can take more donations and when they have a clear list of needs and the right collection places to facilitate them.

Not-for-profit RBKares shared a facebook post yesterday, announcing they can no longer accept more donations on behalf of Kingston hospital due to the volume sent in, with houses and drop off points "piled high" with goods.
